Air conditioning installation & servicing

Air conditioning is work we take on occasionally rather than daily, and it is properly certified: handling refrigerant legally in the UK requires F-Gas certification, which we hold. Because the electrical side is our main trade, the supply and the unit are the responsibility of the same contractor.

What the service covers

Wall-mounted split system installation, multi-split systems serving several rooms from one outdoor unit, the dedicated electrical supply and isolation the unit needs, condensate and refrigerant pipework routing, servicing and filter cleaning, fault diagnosis and re-gas. Handling fluorinated refrigerant legally in the UK requires F-Gas certification, which we hold.

Air conditioning is work we take on occasionally rather than daily, electrical work and groundworks are our primary trades, and we would rather say that plainly than present four trades as equally weighted. What we will not do is treat the certification casually: the refrigerant side and the electrical side are both regulated, and on our installs both are covered by the same contractor.

Who it is for

Homeowners with a room that is unusable in summer, a south-facing bedroom, a loft conversion, a glazed extension. People working from a home office who need the temperature controlled during the day without heating or cooling the rest of the house. Small offices, salons, treatment rooms and server or comms cupboards where equipment needs heat taken out of the room year-round.

When it is needed

The obvious moment is the first genuinely hot week, which is also the worst time to arrange it. Planning it into a renovation, a loft conversion or an extension is far easier: pipework routes and the electrical supply can be designed in while walls are open instead of surface-mounted afterwards.

For an existing system, servicing is needed when airflow drops, when the unit gets noisy, when it stops holding the set temperature, or when it starts icing up, usually a sign of low refrigerant charge, which means a leak somewhere.

Why professional help matters

F-Gas is a legal requirement, not a badge. Anyone installing, servicing or decommissioning a system containing fluorinated refrigerant has to be certified to handle it, and an uncertified install typically means pipework that was never properly evacuated and a system that loses charge within a couple of seasons. Ask any installer for their certification before you let them start.

The second half is electrical. A split system is a fixed appliance needing a correctly sized, protected and isolatable supply. Being NAPIT registered and 18th Edition qualified means that side is designed and certified rather than spurred off the nearest available circuit.

Honest about the volume of this work

Electrical and groundworks are our primary trades; aircon comes up less often. We would rather tell you that plainly than present four trades as if they were all equally weighted.

What's at stake

What happens if it's left

Not scare tactics, these are the situations we are actually called out to fix, and what they cost once they escalate.

What goes wrong with a bad installation

Pipework that was not properly evacuated leaves moisture and air in the system, which forms acid, attacks the compressor and shortens the life of the most expensive component in the unit. A system that has quietly lost charge runs longer and colder, ices up, and eventually fails under load, normally on the hottest day of the year.

Condensate is the other frequent fault. Handled badly, a unit produces a slow leak down the inside of a wall for weeks before anyone connects the staining to the air conditioning above it.

Costs and consequences of leaving it

A leak found early is a repair and a recharge. The same leak left running is a compressor, which is frequently a meaningful share of a new unit. Leaking refrigerant is also an environmental matter, which is precisely why the certification regime exists. On the electrical side, a unit fed from an unsuitable circuit puts nuisance tripping and overheating into the rest of the installation, not just the appliance.

Common mistakes we are called to

Undersized units chosen on price and left running flat out. Outdoor units boxed into a corner with no clearance for airflow. Condensate discharged where it can back up or freeze. Systems wired off a socket circuit rather than a dedicated protected supply. And systems installed by someone who was not certified to handle the refrigerant, which usually only becomes obvious the first time the system needs attention.

Our process

How the job runs, start to finish

The same sequence every time, so you know what happens next and when.

  1. Step 1

    Assess the rooms

We look at the space, the glazing, the orientation and the heat load, then at where an outdoor unit can sit with clearance and without ruining the outside of the building.

  2. Step 2

    Design the install

Unit size and position, pipework and condensate routes, and the electrical supply the system needs, all agreed with you before anything is ordered.

  3. Step 3

    Install and wire

Units mounted, pipework run and pressure tested, condensate routed to a permanent discharge, and a dedicated protected electrical supply with isolation installed and certified.

  4. Step 4

    Evacuate, charge and commission

System evacuated to remove moisture and air, charged correctly under F-Gas certification, then run and checked at temperature in every mode.

  5. Step 5

    Hand over and support

We show you the controls, the filter cleaning routine and the service interval. Work carries a 1-year guarantee and we service what we install.

What you get

What this actually gives you

Every job carries 1-year guarantee on all work and is covered by our insurance.

Legally certified refrigerant work

F-Gas certification held, so the charge is handled the way the regulations require rather than approximated.

One contractor for unit and supply

The electrical circuit is designed, installed and certified by the same NAPIT registered business that fits the system.

Sized to the room

Capacity chosen for the heat load and glazing, so the unit holds temperature at part load instead of running at maximum all day.

Cooling and heating

A heat pump split system takes heat out in summer and puts it in during shoulder seasons, which is often the more useful half of the year.

Quiet, considered positions

Indoor and outdoor unit positions agreed with you, with the clearance the unit needs and cable and pipe runs kept as discreet as the building allows.

Guaranteed and insured

1-year guarantee on all work, backed by £5m public liability, £10m employer's liability and £250,000 professional indemnity.

In detail

Materials, methods and variations

The specifics behind the work, for anyone who wants to know exactly what they're buying.

Systems, materials and methods

Domestic and small commercial installs are almost always inverter-driven split systems: an indoor fan coil and an outdoor condenser joined by insulated copper refrigerant pipework. Inverter compressors modulate rather than cycling on and off, which is quieter and steadier than fixed-speed equipment. A multi-split runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit and is the sensible choice when two or three rooms need treating and there is only one good outdoor position.

Pipework is copper, insulated over its full length, flared or brazed and pressure tested before the system is evacuated with a vacuum pump. Condensate is run to a permanent discharge with a continuous fall, or pumped where gravity is not available. Wall penetrations are sleeved and sealed. The electrical supply is a dedicated protected circuit with local isolation so the unit can be worked on safely.

Variations of the work

Single-room installs, typically a bedroom, home office or conservatory-style extension. Multi-room installs sharing one outdoor unit. Replacement of an existing system where the pipework route can sometimes be reused but the charge, the connections and the electrical supply all get re-checked. Servicing visits for filters, coils, condensate and charge. And fault diagnosis, where the job is to find why the charge dropped before putting more refrigerant in.

Situations this applies to

Loft conversions and top-floor bedrooms that hold heat overnight. Highly glazed extensions and garden rooms. Home offices used through the working day. Salons and treatment rooms where clients notice the temperature immediately. Comms and server cupboards that generate heat all year. And older solid-wall properties where retrofit ductwork is not realistic but a wall-mounted split unit is.

Domestic and commercial differences

Domestic priorities are noise, appearance and the position of the outdoor unit. Commercial priorities are uptime, access for service without disrupting business hours, and documentation. Commercial systems also tend to hold larger refrigerant charges, which brings stricter leak-check obligations, worth knowing before comparing a commercial quote against a domestic one.

Because air conditioning is occasional work for us, we are straight about lead times: if the week is committed to electrical or groundworks jobs, we will tell you when we can realistically start rather than book a date we cannot keep.

Straight answers

Air Conditioning: questions we get asked

Cost, timescales, guarantees and availability, answered as plainly as we can.

How much does air conditioning installation cost?

We price on day rates plus equipment, and both depend on the units, the pipework route and the electrical work needed, so we do not publish figures. A survey gives you a price for your rooms.

How long does an installation take?

A single-room split system is usually a day or two including the electrical supply. Multi-splits and awkward pipework routes take longer, and we give you the sequence with the price.

Do you have F-Gas certification?

Yes. F-Gas certification is a legal requirement for handling fluorinated refrigerant and we hold it. Ask any installer for theirs before work starts.

Will it heat as well as cool?

Modern split systems are heat pumps, so yes, the same unit takes heat out in summer and provides heating in cooler months, which many customers use more than the cooling.

How often does it need servicing?

Plan on an annual service for filters, coils, condensate and a charge check. Skipped servicing shows up as reduced airflow, higher running costs and eventually icing.

How long should a system last?

A properly installed and serviced split system should give many years of service; what shortens that is moisture left in the pipework at install and running on a low charge, which is why evacuation and leak checks matter.

Is the electrical work included?

Yes. The dedicated supply, protection and isolation are installed and certified by us as a NAPIT registered electrical business, so there is no second contractor to arrange.

Is the work guaranteed?

Our work carries a 1-year guarantee, in addition to the manufacturer's own warranty on the equipment. We are also fully insured.

Do you offer emergency air conditioning callouts?

We work 8am–6pm Monday to Friday with occasional weekend work. Air conditioning is occasional work for us, so call and Sam will tell you honestly when he can get to it.

Which areas do you cover?

Staffordshire and the West Midlands from Burntwood, including Lichfield, Cannock, Rugeley, Tamworth, Walsall and Sutton Coldfield.
